Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can rapidly spiral out of control and become life threatening. Therefore anaphylaxis management is critical to prevent this condition from occurring.

Anaphylaxis is a syndrome, and like any syndrome, there can be many causes, but the most common ones are caused by allergies to food, insect bites/stings, or allergies to medications. Other syndromes such as exercise induced, semen allergy, preservative sensitivity and idiopathic anaphylaxis are all possible.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis also very, however anaphylaxis can affect the skin, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, cardiovascular system or central nervous system, and normally will affect more than one system.

The first and most important step for any patient who has concerns for anaphylaxis is a full workup looking to identify the causative agent. Identifying the trigger is the most important step in therapy.

Once the right trigger is identified, anaphylaxis management, avoidance and preparation strategies can then be put into place. Avoidance is the best treatment, but it can be incredibly difficult with certain allergies, especially food allergies.
