Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)

We believe in new approaches for all problems, even if…

We believe in new approaches for all problems, even if those new approaches are 3000 years old. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) interventions have become increasingly popular in what were once more traditional medical practices. At the same time, through grants from the NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), research on CAM has been explosive, especially with allergies and asthma a common target for CAM interventions.  Whether its butterbur for allergic rhinitis, acupuncture for asthma or yoga for chronic urticaria, the published literature points to CAM as equivalent, or in some cases better, than traditional medicine.

However, we are also learning that a problem with CAM is not that the therapies do not work, its that they work, and sometimes too well. Extraordinarily powerful compounds have been extracted from herbs and fungi, and it is these same compounds that are active in many herbal formulations on the market.  Mind-body interventions such as yoga have been used for successfully to effect change in diseases such as asthma and urticaria, but can cause sprains and strains if not used correctly.

Here at Hudson Allergy, one of our founders is a thought leader in the field of allergy and CAM. He has written chapters and articles and lectured concerning CAM interventions and allergic disease.  If you are interested in alternatives to traditional medications and interventions for asthma or allergies, please schedule an appointment for full evaluation.
